If, after installing Java for OS X 2014-001 and the latest version of Java 7 from Oracle, you want to disable Java 7 and re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web plug-in and Web Start functionality, follow these steps.
I recently installed Oracle's Java 7 for OS X on my Mac running Mountain Lion (10.8.2). I was happy with this until I started doing Android development, which throws errors relating to Java 7. I downloaded Apple's Java for OS X Lion Update 1, but when I try to install it I get only this message before Installer closes. Follow these instructions and download the Java Runtime 6 installer to your Mac. Once you have it done, double – click the. Dmg file to launch the installer. Apple has released updates for Java SE 6 for all current versions of OS X today – OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion, and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. The update is is relatively minor, and aimed at improving security and overall reliability.

On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled “Missing plug-in” to download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.
